Lured by yummy hawker fare
Oh,what a hungry crowd!Thousands flocked to the Penang Famous Street Food Fest on Saturday to savour the best of Penang hawker food.The event was held in conjunction with Starwalk's 30th anniversary.
Many left with full stomachs after satisfying their appetites. Some even brought back lucky draw prizes and gifts that ranged from an LCD television to handphone starter packs.
There were 30 stalls and the hawkers were kept busy throughout the festival which started at 6pm. In fact, business was so good that some stalls sold out their food within two hours.
Asam laksa seller Tan Choon Chye from Perak Road said he brought only enough ingredients for 200 servings.
“I did not expect the ingredients to run out by 8pm. I had brought 20kg of noodles and ingredients,” said Tan.

Popular dish:People queuing up for grilled fish. Otak-otak and kuih seller Loo Chiew Heoh of Perak Road said he was glad he participated in the event.
“I managed to sell all 400 kuih within two hours. I hope the fest will be held again as it promotes Penang’s famous hawker dishes,” he said.
Majestic Rojak seller from Swa-tow Lane, Loh Moon Kan, said all his rojak was sold out by 8.30pm, an hour earlier than he expected.
“Although the event started at 6pm, the place was already crowded by 5.30pm,” he said.
“My wife Helen Cheah and I were overwhelmed. We prepared 170 bowls of rojak within 150 minutes. Luckily, we already sliced the fruits before coming here,” he said.
Among other dishes sold were grilled fish, char koay teow, kuih talam, lontong, pasembur and mee.
During the event, visitors born in 1978 received gifts such as towels, umbrellas, and DiGi starter packs.
The Star also invited residents from six welfare homes to the event- Little Sisters of The Poor Home for The Aged, Silver Jubilee Home For The Aged, The Penang Home For the Infirm and Aged, Claris Home Bhd and Nasam.
Star Publications (M) Bhd regional director (north) Datuk Seri Kamal Hashim’s wife Datin Seri Su Hashim presented goodies to representa-tives from the welfare homes.
ViTrox Corporation Bhd contri-buted RM5,000 to the fest, part of which was used to buy gifts for wel-fare home folk.
Entertainment for the evening was sponsored by Pallas. The crowd enjoyed line and belly dancing, hip hop and street jazz performances.
Twelve of the hawkers are fea-tured in the ‘Famous Street Food of Penang: A Guide and Cook Book’ published by Star Publications (M) Bhd.
